Phosphate pretreatment builds a crystal coating, and that reaction drops insoluble solids into the bath. Zirconium forms a thin nanoceramic oxide layer on the part instead, so it does not create that solid waste.
Where phosphate sludge comes from
As phosphate crystals form on the part, insoluble solids fall out of the solution. Over time they cause:
- Sludge on the tank floor
- Coating on heating elements
- Buildup in spray nozzles
- Regular boil-outs to clean the tank
- Hazardous waste hauling
What zirconium does instead
Zirconium forms a thin, nonporous nanoceramic oxide layer on the metal surface. The reaction does not produce the heavy solids that phosphate does.
- No heavy sludge: No boil-out downtime.
- No hazardous waste hauling fees for sludge removal.
- No scale in nozzles: Spray coverage stays consistent.
If phosphate maintenance is taking up your downtime, zirconium can remove most of that work.
