Steelcote™ Panel Guide

These are the panels from our wall at FABTECH, photographed after each test so you can judge the results for yourself. Tell us about your pretreatment line and we'll show you which Steelcote™ chemistry fits it.

Thanks for stopping by. Every panel from Booth #S10019 is here, with the tests behind it.
What We Tested

Here's what we put our Steelcote™ panels through.

TEST 01 STEELCOTE™
How it held up

Neutral Salt Spray

Yellow panel after 250 hours of neutral salt spray
1750 (yellow) · 250 hrs
Blue panel after 250 hours of neutral salt spray
906/2000 (blue) · 250 hrs
Red panel after 250 hours of neutral salt spray
906/ZR-1 (red) · 250 hrs

Each panel is scribed down to bare metal and placed in a chamber of continuous salt fog. We pulled three panels from each process at 250, 500, 750 and 1,000 hours and measured how far rust crept out from the scribe line.

✓All three panels made it to 1,000 hours. None of them showed any creep at the scribe through 500 hours, and the most any panel showed at 1,000 hours was 1 mm.
Method: ASTM B117

Direct Impact

Yellow panel after a 40 lb direct impact
1750 (yellow) · 40 lbs
Blue panel after a 60 lb direct impact
906/2000 (blue) · 60 lbs
Red panel after an 80 lb direct impact
906/ZR-1 (red) · 80 lbs

A steel ball is dropped onto the panel from a measured height, and the height sets the force. Each color of paint has its own impact rating, so each panel took a different force: 40 lbs on yellow, 60 on blue and 80 on red. Any cracking or lifting you can see with the naked eye counts as a failure.

✓Each panel was struck twice. The metal dented and the coating stretched with it, with no cracks, chips or adhesion loss around either dent.
Method: ASTM D2794

Cross-hatch Adhesion

Yellow panel after cross-hatch adhesion test
1750 (yellow)
Blue panel after cross-hatch adhesion test
906/2000 (blue)
Red panel after cross-hatch adhesion test
906/ZR-1 (red)

A grid is cut through the coating to the metal, with the line spacing set by how thick the paint is. Tape is pressed over the grid and pulled off, and the panel is graded on how much coating comes off with it.

✓None of the squares came off with the tape, so there was no adhesion loss. That earns a 5B, the highest rating on the scale.
Method: ASTM D3359

Conical Mandrel Bend

Yellow panel after conical mandrel bend test
1750 (yellow)
Blue panel after conical mandrel bend test
906/2000 (blue)
Red panel after conical mandrel bend test
906/ZR-1 (red)

The panel is bent about 135 degrees around a cone, so the bend runs from a tight radius at one end to a wide radius at the other. The tight end is checked for cracks, and any crack is measured in millimeters.

✓The coating held along the full length of the bend, with no cracks, flaking or adhesion loss at the tight end, where the metal stretches the most.
Method: ASTM D522
